Mythos and Logos: What Was Genuinely New in the Presocratics

Many people call the Presocratics the first masters of rational thought. Jonathan Barnes made this case as well as anyone in The Presocratic Philosophers. He argued that with the Milesians, people first began to back up their claims with arguments instead of simply asserting them. For a long time, European histories of ideas have treated these thinkers as the place where reason itself begins — the thin bright line between the darkness of myth and the daylight of philosophy.

This claim deserves a closer look, because it is wrong in two ways at once. Reason did not suddenly switch on in sixth-century Miletus. People had been thinking carefully and systematically for thousands of years before Thales was born. And the supposed clean break with myth — the moment when natural events stopped being the moods of gods and became the workings of law — is much less clean than the story requires. A good deal of what we admire in these men is a portrait their modern readers painted, looking back across 2,500 years for an ancestor who resembled them.

And yet, when all of that is granted, something stubborn remains. Something did change in the Greek texts. It is not the thing the textbooks usually name, and it survives both the oldest attack on it, Aristotle’s, and the newest. This essay tries to say plainly what it was. Throughout, I quote the fragments from the edition by André Laks and Glenn W. Most, the nine-volume Early Greek Philosophy that has now become the standard. I give their bold “D” numbers along with the older Diels–Kranz “B” numbers that most readers still recognize.

Reason Did Not Begin in Miletus

Thousands of years before anyone in Miletus looked at the stars and asked what they were made of, other societies were solving hard problems with careful observation and organized thinking.

In Mesopotamia, scribes built a number system based on 60 that still lives in our minutes and degrees. They tracked the planets well enough to predict their movements, and they wrote down laws in the step-by-step logic of the Code of Hammurabi: if this happens, then that follows. In Egypt, the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus works through problems that are really algebra, and the Edwin Smith Papyrus records medical cases one by one, matching each injury to its outlook and treatment, with almost no appeal to magic. In India, centuries before Aristotle wrote his logic, Panini’s grammar of Sanskrit, the Ashtadhyayi, laid out a system of rules so exact that modern linguists compare it to computer code. The Shulba Sutras contain geometric constructions that use the Pythagorean relationship long before Pythagoras. In China, the thinkers later grouped as the School of Names argued about how words attach to things, while a vast state ran on organized, bureaucratic reasoning.

None of this was philosophy in the Greek sense, and that is exactly the point. The ability to think carefully is not the same as the particular kind of writing the Greeks happened to invent. Calling earlier peoples irrational confuses the form of thought with the power of it.

It also helps to remember what myth was actually for. For most of human history, stories were not failed science. They were organized models. They held societies together, stored hard-won knowledge about nature, and packed cause and effect into a form a community could carry across generations. People who could sail the open ocean by the stars, or build the Great Pyramid with amazing precision, were running long, exact chains of geometry, physics, and measurement. Not writing an abstract treatise is not the same as not reasoning. David Graeber and David Wengrow’s The Dawn of Everything spends much of its length on this very point: the deep past is full of complex, self-aware, thinking societies that older scholarship lumped together into a single “pre-rational” blur.

The Positivist Filter

So if the Presocratics were not the first to think clearly, were they at least the first to separate nature from the gods completely? Here a second problem appears, and this one is about us rather than them.

The men we file under “the first philosophers” do not act much like philosophers when you read everything they wrote. Parmenides did not present his logic in a seminar. He wrote it as an epic poem in verse and framed it as a vision. In the poem he rides a chariot to the gates where the paths of Night and Day divide, and a nameless goddess welcomes him and reveals the truth. Empedocles announced that he was a god walking the earth, deathless, able to heal the sick and command the winds. Pythagoras ran a secretive religious group that treated numbers as sacred and refused to eat meat, because he believed souls pass from body to body. These are not the habits of laboratory scientists.

The familiar picture — the calm reasoner who lays out a chain of steps and says, here is my argument, find the flaw — is mostly a modern invention, and it belongs to the twentieth century. In the middle of the last century, philosophers shaped by logical positivism searched these old texts for the parts that looked like modern science and logic. They found the chains of deduction and lifted them out, and they quietly set aside the religious, political, and poetic world in which those chains were made. Barnes is the most distinguished heir of that project. Karl Popper read the Presocratics through his own theory of guesses and testing. The result is a Parmenides and a Heraclitus who sound a great deal like Oxford professors. The real Presocratic mind is messier, stranger, and more interesting than that.

And Yet, Something Shifts

None of this settles the question, because the positivists were not imagining things. They were responding to something real in the texts, even if they described it badly.

The first sign is a new demand for internal consistency. Take Parmenides again. A goddess is speaking, and yet she does not ask for faith. She tells him to test what she says and to judge it by reasoning. The message arrives wrapped in a vision, but the instruction attached to it is to weigh the argument and look for the weak spot. That instruction has no parallel in Homer. Nobody checks the Muse’s work.

The second sign is the argument that runs from one generation to the next. The Presocratics read each other and tried to break each other’s reasoning. Parmenides argued that “what is not” cannot exist. From this he concluded that there can be no empty space, and therefore no real motion. The atomists, Leucippus and Democritus, accepted the shape of his argument and turned it around: since we clearly do see motion, and motion needs empty space to move into, empty space must exist after all. Historians did not invent this pattern from the outside. It is a recorded conversation in which one thinker uses another thinker’s own logic against his conclusion. Whatever else is going on, that is new.

Four Changes You Can See in the Texts

The shift is easiest to see when you put the new texts next to the old ones they grew out of. Four changes stand out.

First, human judgment replaces divine authority. In Homer and in the Near Eastern epics, truth comes down from above, and human beings receive it. The poet who opens the Iliad asks the Muses to tell him the story, because they are present and know everything, while mortals know nothing:

Tell me now, you Muses who have your homes on Olympus, for you are goddesses, you are present and know all things, while we hear only the rumor of it and know nothing.

Human reason is worth nothing here; truth is a gift you can only ask for. Now set against this the voice of Parmenides’ goddess (Laks–Most D8, DK 28 B7). She tells him not to trust habit or the senses, but to judge her much-debated proof by reasoning alone. The speaker is still divine. The instruction is not. She hands the verdict to the listener’s own mind.

Second, natural law replaces the personalities of gods. In the Babylonian creation epic, the Enuma Elish, the world is literally built from a god’s dead body: Marduk splits the slain Tiamat like a shellfish, makes the sky from one half of her, and posts the winds like guards. The weather is a chain of command. Anaximander describes the same universe in a completely different way (Laks–Most D6, DK 12 B1), saying that things pass back into whatever they came from:

…into these too their destruction happens, according to obligation: for they pay the penalty and retribution to each other for their injustice according to the order of time.

There are no characters in that sentence. The elements settle their debts with each other under an impersonal law, described in words borrowed from the courtroom and the city, and time keeps the records. The gods have not been argued away. They have simply been given nothing to do.

Third, knowledge becomes human work instead of a divine gift. The opening of the Odyssey treats the poet as a mouthpiece: he asks the Muse to speak of the man of many turns, and the Muse supplies the words while the singer voices them. Xenophanes breaks that circuit (Laks–Most D53, DK 21 B18):

The gods did not reveal all things to mortals from the beginning; but in time, by seeking, they find out better.

This may be the oldest statement of progress in the Western record. Truth is not handed down complete at the beginning. It is approached slowly, by searching, and it is always open to revision. That single line moves the source of knowledge out of heaven and into human time.

Fourth, the very idea of gods made in our image gets mocked. Xenophanes does not just set the gods aside; he explains them as projections (DK 21 B15 and B16):

If cattle and horses or lions had hands and could draw, horses would draw the gods like horses, and cattle like cattle. The Ethiopians say their gods are snub-nosed and black; the Thracians, that theirs are blue-eyed and red-haired.

This is not a myth about the gods. It is an argument about why people believe in the gods they do. With one comparison across cultures, Xenophanes turns religious images into evidence of human bias.

Heraclitus and the Logos

Heraclitus of Ephesus, writing around 500 BCE, pushes all of this further than anyone before him. His tool is a single word: logos. In everyday Greek it meant speech, account, or word. He gives it a new technical meaning, closer to the measure or proportion that holds the world together. With it he does not just strip the gods of their personalities. He demotes them to staff.

He begins by separating the truth from himself. He is not an authority to be obeyed (Laks–Most D46, DK 22 B50):

Listening not to me but to the Logos, it is wise to agree that all things are one.

Do not trust me because I said it, he tells his readers. Listen instead to the order itself, which is there for anyone to find. Next he removes the maker of the world. The cosmos, he says, was made by no god and no man. It always was, is, and will be: an ever-living fire, kindled in measures and put out in measures (Laks–Most D85, DK 22 B30). No creation, no creator, no first day — only fixed proportions that the world keeps for itself. He puts even the sun under that rule: it will not overstep its measures, and if it tried, the Furies, the agents of Justice, would hunt it down (DK 22 B94). Justice here is not a goddess who answers prayers. It is a name for the fact that the system corrects itself. Stray from the measure, and the measure pulls you back.

Conflict gets the same treatment. In myth, strife happens when gods lose their tempers. For Heraclitus, strife is the structure that makes a stable world possible at all. A bow and a lyre work only because opposing tensions pull against each other in exact balance. Loosen that opposition and the string goes silent and the weapon goes dead (Laks–Most D49, DK 22 B51). He states the principle plainly (Laks–Most D47, DK 22 B10):

Conjoinings: wholes and not wholes, converging and diverging, harmonious dissonant; and out of all things one and out of one all things.

Day and night, summer and winter, are not battles between powers. They are the back-and-forth swing of one self-balancing order.

Aristotle’s Attack

Within two centuries, this had earned Heraclitus a powerful enemy. Aristotle was the first to write down the Law of Non-Contradiction: a thing cannot both be and not be, in the same respect, at the same time. When he read the fragments about the unity of opposites, he did not see wisdom. He saw the basic law of thought under attack.

In Book Gamma of the Metaphysics, he makes non-contradiction the foundation of all reasoning and names Heraclitus as the chief offender (around 1005b):

It is impossible for anyone to suppose the same thing to be and not to be, as some think Heraclitus says.

If you truly believed that a thing both is and is not at once, Aristotle argues, you would have to hold two flatly contradictory beliefs at the same moment, which no mind can do. And the cost is not just private confusion. If opposites are identical, meaning falls apart (around 1006a):

If words signify nothing, conversation with others is destroyed, and in truth conversation with oneself as well; for it is impossible to think anything without thinking one thing.

If “river” can mean river and not-river, the word points to nothing. A person who will not hold any word to a single meaning, Aristotle says, is no better than a plant.

He even offers a diagnosis. Heraclitus, he suggests, watched the world change without stopping and mistook change over time for contradiction at a single instant. The river stays the same river in form and identity even as new water runs through it. Only careless wording makes it sound as though the river both is and is not itself at the very same moment.

There is a sharp irony here. Barnes praised the Presocratics for putting argument above assertion. Yet Aristotle, the man who built formal logic, looks back at Heraclitus and says he did exactly the opposite — that he stayed a poet, dealing in riddles and shock where he should have offered clean reasoning. By the very standard the tradition uses to honor the Presocratics, their own great systematizer convicts one of the greatest of them.

The Modern Vindication of Heraclitus

Modern scholars have largely reversed the verdict. Readers such as Charles Kahn, Edward Hussey, and above all Daniel W. Graham argue that Aristotle misread his man — that he forced a dynamic, metaphorical thinker into his own system of fixed definitions and then blamed him for not fitting.

The case depends on reading the fragments in context. Consider his remark about sea water (DK 22 B61): it is at once the purest water and the foulest, life-giving to fish and deadly to men. Aristotle hears a flat contradiction: the water is both pure and not pure. But Heraclitus is not giving the sea two absolute properties at once. He is pointing out that “pure” and “polluted” are relationships, not fixed facts. They depend on whose body is doing the drinking. The sea is healthy for the fish and deadly for the man at the same time, with no contradiction at all. The same answer solves the road that is at once the way up and the way down (Laks–Most D51, DK 22 B60): a single hillside path is a climb for the person going up and a descent for the person coming down. The two opposed descriptions do not cancel the path. Both are needed to describe it.

The river is the deepest case (Laks–Most D65b, DK 22 B12):

Different waters flow upon those who step into the same rivers.

Aristotle and Plato took this to mean that nothing keeps a stable identity. Graham reads it the other way around, as a new theory of what identity is. A river is not a stable lump of matter. It is a pattern that exists only because the water keeps moving. Stop the flow and you have a pond, or a dry bed — you no longer have a river. Change does not destroy the river’s identity. Change is what creates it.

This is the heart of Graham’s reading, set out in Explaining the Cosmos and in his edition of the sources, The Texts of Early Greek Philosophy. Heraclitus is not claiming that everything is really fire, the way Thales thought everything was water. Fire is his image for change itself — not a thing but a process, a continuous burning that consumes and transforms. Read that way, the supposed contradiction never appears. A flame keeps its shape exactly because it never keeps its material. A body stays itself for decades while every cell in it is replaced. Large structures hold steady because the material underneath them is constantly being exchanged. That is not a failure of logic. It is an early, and rather good, description of what we would now call a dynamic system.

The careful study of the texts themselves has backed this up. The most important recent tool is the nine-volume Early Greek Philosophy of André Laks and Glenn W. Most, which has effectively replaced Diels–Kranz as the working edition. For a century, the fragments were cited by the DK numbers, which order them by the ancient author who happened to quote each one. That system scatters related thoughts across the catalogue and strips away context by design. Laks and Most renumber everything by theme, gathering the fragments under headings such as the Logos, cosmic fire, the unity of opposites, and the soul. They mark each with a bold D for doctrine, so that the river fragment, DK B12, becomes D65b, and the Logos fragment, DK B50, becomes D46. Simply arranging Heraclitus by theme rather than by accident of transmission makes the shape of his thought visible in a way the old numbering hid.

The Greek itself tells the same story the arrangement does. Heraclitus reaches for verbs of continuous action rather than nouns of fixed being. In the river fragment, the waters are flowing on, in a present tense of unbroken motion. The word for “same” attaches to the river, while the word for “different” attaches to the waters, so that a single thing is held together by the many things streaming through it. The word logos itself, read against the business Greek of the period, carries the sense of a ratio or a reckoning — a balance sheet — rather than a sacred Word. Matter changes form endlessly, but the proportions in which it changes stay constant.

Even Aristotle’s complaint that Heraclitus is impossible to punctuate becomes evidence for the defense. Aristotle could not decide, in the famous opening sentence (DK 22 B1), whether “forever” described the logos that holds or people’s failure to understand it. Kahn’s reply, in The Art and Thought of Heraclitus, is that the ambiguity is the technique. Heraclitus left the word hanging between the two readings on purpose, so that “forever” covers both the eternal order and our constant blindness to it. The sentence is built to make the reader’s mind do the very thing the sentence is about. What Aristotle took for sloppiness was design.

What Actually Began

So where does this leave the claim we started with?

It leaves it half true and badly described. The Presocratics did not invent reason. Reason is older than any of them, and the long human past is full of it. They were not the cool, secular logicians their modern admirers wanted, either. They were poets and mystics and founders of religious groups who happened to be doing something new in the middle of all that. The positivist portrait gets the texture wrong, and that matters, because it hides how strange and how mixed the achievement really was.

But there was an achievement. It was not the separation of reason from religion. They never made that separation, and they would not have understood the wish to. It was something narrower and more lasting. They began, clumsily, to pull apart two things that myth had always held together: the authority of the speaker and the truth of the claim. The goddess tells Parmenides to check her work. Heraclitus tells his readers to listen past him to the order itself. Xenophanes turns the gods into a case study in human projection and treats knowledge as a search that is never finished. In each case, the question shifts from who said it to whether it holds up. Once that question can be asked, formal logic and natural science become possible later, even if they are nowhere in sight yet.

And here is the part that survives every attack. When Aristotle accuses Heraclitus of breaking the Law of Non-Contradiction, and when Barnes, much later, praises the Presocratics for putting argument above assertion, both men are doing the very thing the Presocratics made available. They are holding a text accountable — demanding that it be consistent, that it make sense, that it stand up to examination. You cannot make that demand of the Enuma Elish. There is no seam in it to test, because its authority is the authority of the divine, full stop. You can make that demand of Heraclitus, and people have been doing so for 2,500 years. The fact that we still argue about whether his river fragment makes sense is not a sign that he failed. It is the clearest possible sign of what he and his contemporaries began. The argument about Heraclitus is itself their inheritance.

That is the genuine thing. Not a clean break, not the birth of pure reason, not a group of Oxford logicians in sandals — but a new and lasting demand: that a claim about the world answer to the world, and to anyone willing to check, rather than to the standing of whoever made it. They did not finish the work. No one has. But they are the ones who first asked us to judge by reasoning. The instruction has outlasted the goddess who gave it.
